Hello, you helped me out on self winterizing my DWR last year. I hope you are getting out camping in great places this year.

I bought the fan you discussed in your refrig blog over the winter. I noticed that it has three wires coming from the fan, with no schematic supplied, versus the two coming from the refrig thermostat and ground. How did you wire the fan? Which wires did you use and what color wire on the fan connected with what color wire from the camper?

Your help would speed up my wiring process tremendously.

Thanks again for your great ideas.

The bottom of the G5 enclosure has 4 screw holes in it. I bolted two boards to the bottom of the G5 with two straps between the boards and the G5. Then I sat the G5 on the battery housing and ran the ratchet straps around the frame the battery sits on.
It is very solid but I hope to come up with something even more permanent in the future. I just wanted to see how well it works and I love having the extra storage.

We did not have to replace the Mattress. I just washed it down with diluted bleach in water and let the sun dry it. But ours wasn't too bad. If your Mattress is really bad then I would replace it. I don't know of any places where you could get a replacement, but I would buy a solid latex mattress and cut it to fit. I like latex mattresses more and since there are no springs inside you can cut the corners off to match the Airstream.

Good luck. Martin

Did you have to replace the mattress itself? If so, do you know where I can order one? We lived in the desert for the first few years we owned our CCD Airstream, and so we never had this problem. Four months in Washington State...different story.

Hi Martin Thomas
thank you for sharing your story which i hear as a story of memories of family events and presumably all the range of emotions that go along with the family holiday particularly the confinements of camping. I am sorry to hear of your brother mikes death from a motorcycle and i note the value in having such a strong memory from formative years which includes him and helps sustain his memory.
i read this article because i have recently bought a l207 1977 xcamper from germany in good order. for many years my family( self wife and 5 children) have gone camping around europe and have many happy and stimulating and humourous memories associated. The family extends to grandchild now and offers the hope of possible rejeuvenation and a new era of sharing the experience of something wonderful. our memories are so much better than if we stayed in the most luxurios accomodation in the world. My quiet and unassuming congratulations go to your parents. Thank you Martin

It is a great rice cocker and the Airstream polishes itself when you go 80mph in the rain ;)
Fortunately no bears showed up, too many other campers to eat.

You guys have FINE taste in rice cookers. I have been using this exact model for 4 years and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. versatile, fun, makes a mean congee (rice porridge) for breakfast.
Did bears really show up??
The Airstream looks so shiny and new in this photo. When I get mine someday will you come over and polish it too?

I haven't gone through another winter yet but did some cold weather camping and so far so good. It definitely keeps moisture from building up below the mattress in our DWR Airstream. Good Luck. Martin Thomas

Martin, I tow the DWR as well! I heard that there were only 25 made in the country; I find that hard to believe but I've had it for two years and I've never met or heard of anyone else with one. I attempted to get a subgroup created on the airforums to discover where the others are but was informed it's too similar mechanically and I should consider it a Bambi. (But, the DWR, it's a lifestyle model...) Maybe they'll reconsider. We have yardage replacement and such to discuss.

Love your photos, especially the pan. I have tons of amateur shots up at www.airstreaming.net if you are lonely to see another one. We're trashing it (just kidding) (sort of). -RG Coleman

Hi Ashley,

Sorry for the late response. Thanks for liking the blog! Unfortunately I don't know of a local airstream social group but I'm sure you could find one at http://www.airforums.com/. I hope you can find a vintage airstream that won't take years to fix up. They are out there. Maybe you could afford a 5-10 year old Airstream. We love our Airstream and even more love to travel with it and see beautiful places.

Thanks for contacting me.

Hi Chaz,

First, thanks for liking the site. Blowing out your DWR Airstream is a procedure that takes me about 1 hour with prep. You need to be systematic about blowing out the sink, shower-head, toilet and then the freshwater tank and at last the water pump (very important). The first thing I do is drain the hot water tank from the outside (the big white plastic screw behind the water heater access panel). It just has to drain, there can still be a a little water in the bottom of the tank (you wont get that water out of there anyway). Then it gets busy and I would recommend just watching somebody do it and to write down the steps. But with some knowledge of plumbing you can do it. The next thing is to enable the water heater bypass. Instructions for this are in the manual. It is located in the closet under the white door that flips up. Now you systematically push air through all the valves and when no water comes you can open up the pump drain under the front bench by the fresh water tank. Make sure you close the other valves so you have enough pressure. Then when little water come out the outside I turn on the pump on and run it until it is running dry, not too long. I tip the trailer forward at the beginning and level it out again. You need to make sure you are systematic. Also at the end I open the two drains at the bottom of the trailer by the black water tank valve. Then you need to add RV Anti-Freeze to the sink and shower drain to fill up the drain siphon. ABout a cup in each.

If you are uncomfortable doing this then you should get it done by a Pro otherwise your plumbing bill will be large and your first camping trip of the season will be a disaster. The lines HAVE TO be blown out. Draining does nothing.

Also I thought there also were only 2008 but I think they made nine more DWRs in 2009. Enjoy.

Hi,

I was enjoying looking at your site. I have a DWR I bought 2 years ago. I had the local dealer blow the lines the first two years, but I am cheap. do the lines really need to be blown or do you think that just opening the drains at the water heater and fresh water input would do it? I did order one of those adapters above, but I was just wondering your opinion. Also, I saw an ad for a 2009 DWR? I thought they were only a 2008 offered product. Do you know?

Thanks for your response in advance.

hi there! i love your blog! my fiance and i live in the twin cities and are dreaming of airstream ownership ourselves, though it will be awhile before we can afford one. i was wondering if you know of any local airstream social groups or something of the like? i'd love to meet up with you or anyone else that has experience with the airstream lifestyle. we are especially interested in purchasing something older/vintage to fix-up, since a new airstream is incredibly far out of our price range.

thanks for sharing all of your adventures!!
best,
ashlie

Hi, nice to see that Airstream again (had a glimpse over Karin's shoulder the last time). Normally, I'd say, everyone going on a 3100mi vacation with car and trailer has gone bonkers but: in 2007 we did something similar (5400km through Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany and back in 3 weeks with 4 kids and a minivan with a roof-box).
And we did some trips during our stays in the US, too: one day from Raleigh to Washington DC and back with 6-7 hours strolling in one day-things we'd never do in Austria...
Keep having fun with "The Beast" and each other,
Max
