Normally, I'd say, everyone going on a 3100mi vacation with car and trailer has gone bonkers but: in 2007 we did something similar (5400km through Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany and back in 3 weeks with 4 kids and a minivan with a roof-box). And we did some trips during our stays in the US, too: one day from Raleigh to Washington DC and back with 6-7 hours strolling in one day-things we'd never do in Austria...
